Christmas Celebrations!

December 20th, 2017 | Posted by Mr Rockey in Celebrations - (0 Comments)

What a way to end the term ready for Christmas! Yesterday we spent the most magical morning at St Mary’s church in Westwood where we held one of our favourite events of the season, our Christingle service. We were delighted to be welcomed back by Reverend Joanna to celebrate this very special occasion, with each child having made their own Christingle to light.

After a chilly walk down to the church in the December morning air everyone settled quickly into the warm church, full of history and atmosphere, for a super service which included readings of the story of Christingle from the children and some traditional and favourite Christmas songs played beautifully by Mr King on the church organ. With such superb acoustics, the children wounded just incredible as they filled the church with their singing and we all took a moment to reflect when we lit our Christingles and the church was filled with light.

I managed to record the service for you to listen to, so I hope you do get a sense of the wonderful atmosphere and enjoy our children singing beautifully. Just press play to enjoy and here are some photos of the occasion too.

Today saw the end of a long, busy, yet exciting and productive term, culminating with our traditional Carols around the Tree assembly. I was thrilled to see so many people, who once again had packed themselves into our hall with standing room only!. For a small village school, we are so lucky to have a wonderful community who are incredibly supportive, so thank you so much for coming. With traditional Christmas songs and carols, readings, dance and even live music from all of our talented children, I do hope that you enjoyed the service as much as I did, it was an absolute pleasure to lead it and to enjoy the lead in to Christmas together. My thanks to Dave King for accompanying us on the piano once again and providing the most festive atmosphere. Please have a look at the photos from today’s assembly below.

It was so lovely to share Tea and mince pies with the Head after school with you all too and to see in Christmas together. I am very proud of our school community and it is always such a pleasure to spend time with you all.

All that remains now is for me to thank you all for your tremendous support throughout this term. May I take this opportunity to wish you a restful Christmas, full of fun and enjoyment and I hope that Father Christmas brings you what you have asked for…

International Christmas Around the World

December 16th, 2017 | Posted by Mr Rockey in International | Learning | School News - (0 Comments)

This week we went global at Westwood with Iford School with an international day focused completely on Christmas around the World. After the success of Clover class link up with Room 104 of Georgetown Elementary school on Wednesday, sharing Christmas traditions and wishes face to face, Thursday was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn about how other countries celebrate Christmas.

All of the children throughout the school were put into groups and spent a session together with each teacher learning about how Christmas is celebrated in Germany, Scandinavia, China and Iceland. What was so lovely was that our school family worked so wonderfully together, supporting each other and enjoying the opportunity to work with friends that were both older and younger. The teachers all planned a super day for everyone that was enormous fun and so informative. My huge thanks to the staff for another brilliantly planned day and to the children for their outstanding behaviour and sense of fun. We all agreed this is something we would do again soon!

Here are some photos I was able to take of the children working together on International Day:

World Book Day 2017

March 2nd, 2017 | Posted by Mr Rockey in reading | School News - (1 Comments)

From the moment I opened the door at 8.55am this morning, I knew that we were going to have a wonderful day. I was not wrong. Standing in front of the assembled school it was so lovely to see how everyone – children, staff and adults – had made such a superb effort to all come as their favourite book character to celebrate World Book Day. With everyone from Where’s Wally to Goldilocks and The Boy in the Dress to Harry Potter, all types of books and stories were represented and it demonstrated what a love of reading our school has.

In class the fun continued throughout the day, with the staff all having planned some fantastic learning activities for the children, all centered around reading and books. Furthermore, a whole school reading session, with older children pairing with younger children made the day even more special and a special announcement from Mrs Hannam of an extreme reading award has now got everyone thinking how best to create that perfect photo of themselves reading!

In all it was another day to be proud of what we have at our school and a perfect way to mark the occasion. Here are some photos of the fun we had:

Maths Day

Today in school we have been enjoying a huge range of mathematical activities as part of our whole school Maths Day. Every class took part and classes were filled with everything from skittles to a science and maths cross curricular activity in Orchid class counting taste buds! There really was something for everyone and the children had a fantastic time.

Here are some photos of our lovely day.

Westwood Church Fair

June 26th, 2016 | Posted by Mr Rockey in School News - (0 Comments)

For the first time yesterday we had the pleasure of being invited to dance at the Westwood Midsummer Church fair. With mixed weather but huge amounts of enthusiasm and energy, the children took to the arena at Westwood Manor and put on a fabulous show of set dancing and then later, some traditional maypole dancing. This was followed by a circle dance and it was so lovely to see so many people join in to round off what was, for us, a fun and exciting afternoon.

Once again it was a joy to be a part of such a thriving and vibrant community and I would like to thank everyone involved for inviting us. As a school, we are always looking to forge even stronger links with our local community and yesterday was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and share in the fun. I would also like to thank our brilliant children from Orchid and Lotus class for their hard work in learning and performing the dances and to thank them and their parents for giving up their Saturday afternoon to come along to the fair.

We managed to capture a video of the children in action performing their single plait:
